The Minister of Agriculture, Florin Barbu, emphasized that the purchasing power of Romanians has decreased, and food consumption has dropped by almost 30%, which affects food processing units that are facing losses. In this context, Barbu announced that he will propose, next week, a bill that will cap the commercial markup at 20% for all food products, in cases where inflation exceeds 5%.

He explained that, although the current inflation is around 10%, his intervention will not affect the free market when inflation is below 5%. He also mentioned that the Competition Council has observed price increases for certain foods that were not included in the ordinance regarding basic products. This measure aims to protect consumers and stabilize the food market.
