Eurozone companies primarily finance their artificial intelligence investments through internal funds and face difficulties accessing external sources of financing, according to data from the European Central Bank cited by Reuters.

The data highlight an important difference between European companies and their US rivals. While eurozone firms rely mainly on internal resources to support the development of artificial intelligence projects, US companies have borrowed heavily to finance their expansion.

The new finding highlighted by the ECB’s analysis concerns differing access to financing and how it may influence the pace of investment in artificial intelligence. For eurozone companies, limited external financing may reduce their ability to rapidly expand these investments compared with US firms, which have relied more heavily on loans and other sources of capital.

The information provides a further indication of the differences between the two markets in the race to develop and adopt artificial intelligence-based technologies.
