Apostolos Tzitzikostas, European Commissioner for Transport, stated that flight cancellations caused by rising fuel prices are not classified as 'extraordinary circumstances', which means that airlines must compensate affected passengers. He emphasized that the increase in kerosene prices is a normal risk in the aviation industry.
Tzitzikostas mentioned that Europe can ensure a long-term supply of fuel for airplanes, despite warnings about possible shortages. The Commissioner explained that flight cancellations are often the result of financial decisions made by companies, which no longer consider certain routes viable.
In the context of the tourist season, he called for caution in public communication to avoid panic. Tzitzikostas estimated that the impact on European tourism will be limited, with domestic tourism compensating for the decrease in the number of tourists from the Middle East.
