In 2024, cash outside the banking system continued to exhibit seasonal patterns, with notable increases in April, November and December due to holidays. The peak value was reached on December 20, at RON 134.553 billion, an increase of 14.7% compared to 2023. At the end of the year, nearly 1.94 billion banknotes and 5.873 billion coins were in circulation, up 13.3% and 3.9% from the previous year. The share of 100 lei banknotes was the highest, while the number of coins increased in all denominations, with 10 and 50 bani banknotes having the highest shares. Each inhabitant had, on average, 102 banknotes and 308 coins.
