The interim Minister of Agriculture, Tánczos Barna, announced that, at the proposal of UDMR, the Agriculture Committee of the Chamber of Deputies voted to extend the cap on the commercial markup on basic foodstuffs until December 31, 2026. The measure, which currently expires on June 30, still needs the approval of the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies to come into effect.
Tánczos Barna emphasized the importance of this measure in the context of high inflation, which affects family budgets. Capping the commercial markup will help limit the increase in prices for essential products such as bread, milk, meat, and vegetables.
The list of products included in this measure reflects the basic foods frequently consumed by the population. The measure was introduced to temper price increases and has been previously extended amid economic pressures.
