The former president of Romania, Traian Băsescu, discussed on Digi24 the major issue of interest rates on public debt, which are rising at an impressive speed. He mentioned that Romania paid approximately 11 billion euros in interest in 2025, and this amount could severely affect the ability to manage future European funds, estimating that in the financial exercise 2028-2034, the entire sum of 60 billion euros could be consumed by interest.

Băsescu emphasized that the solution to stop this increase in interest rates would be to achieve a zero budget deficit, however, Romania ended the year 2025 with a deficit of 6.4%. He explained that as long as there is a deficit, the debt will continue to grow, which will lead to increasingly larger annual interest payments, increasing the risk of default.
