Airbus will open a new conversion center in Seville, Spain, to transform A330 airliners into A330 MRTT military refueling aircraft, according to an announcement made by the Airbus Defence and Space division.
The center is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2027 and will increase the annual number of converted aircraft from five to seven. The A330 MRTT is used for refueling fighter jets, troop transport, and medical evacuations. The decision to open the center in Seville is considered strategic due to the local industrial infrastructure and expertise.
Airbus will invest in modernizing the facilities to adapt processes to military operations. With 91 orders from 19 countries, Airbus controls 90% of the global market for tanker aircraft, and the announcement comes amid increasing defense budgets in Europe.
Airbus has over 14,000 employees in Spain, including 3,500 in Seville and Cadiz.
