Starting in 2026, employees in Austria who work on weekends or holidays will no longer pay taxes on the income earned, benefiting from favorable tax measures.

The Austrian government announced that, starting in 2026, overtime work and work performed on holidays will no longer be taxed, thus providing financial support to employees in key sectors such as health, police, rescue, transport, commerce, and tourism. The new regulations, adopted by the governing coalition, target approximately two-thirds of employees in Austria who frequently work overtime. The measure also reintroduces the tax exemption for work performed on Sundays and on legal holidays, which had previously been abolished.

Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer emphasized that nearly half a million people regularly work on holidays, and these changes will significantly improve their financial situation. Labor Minister Korinna Schumann highlighted the symbolic importance of the decision, stressing that employees who forgo their days off deserve fair tax treatment. The financial benefits will be felt by many employees, with annual savings that can reach several hundred euros.
