The Carabinieri in the Asti area uncovered a case of exploitation involving Romanian workers in the town of Grazzano Badoglio, where 15 people were housed in unsanitary conditions and paid just over 2 euros per hour. The investigation began after law enforcement officers noticed that several people were leaving a dilapidated building every day and being transported to nearby farms.
The property had 15 beds, mattresses placed directly on the floor, a rudimentary kitchen, and a single bathroom, unsuitable for the number of occupants. The five workers checked on site were Romanian citizens, and their identity documents were being kept by the property owners.
Investigators identified a father and his son, both Romanian and residing in Casale Monferrato, who provided accommodation and transportation for the workers. The two were reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Vercelli for illegal labor intermediation and labor exploitation.
In a vineyard in Castelletto Merli, the authorities also identified a farmer accused of employing workers without training, medical supervision, or protective equipment. His activity was suspended, and the fines amounted to 42,000 euros. The case is part of a broader investigation into 107 Romanians exploited by a company registered in Romania, but managed in the Gorizia area.
