Almost 12% of Germany's population has experienced discrimination, mostly based on ethnic origin and gender.

A recent study conducted by the German Center for Research on Integration and Migration revealed that nearly one in eight residents of Germany was discriminated against in 2022, affecting approximately 9 million people. Ferda Ataman, the federal commissioner for discrimination, presented this data in Berlin, emphasizing that discrimination is not an isolated phenomenon, but a systemic one that affects the daily lives of many citizens.

The most common reasons for discrimination are ethnic origin (42% of cases) and gender (24%), significantly impacting women. Although the General Equal Treatment Act has been in place since 2006, the study shows that it has not led to the eradication of discrimination.

An alarming aspect is that over half of the victims did not report the incidents, due to a lack of trust in the justice system. Ataman indicated that Germany has much to learn from other countries, especially regarding the sanctioning of discrimination.
