Previously, Ursula von der Leyen “strongly” condemned drone attacks on commercial vessels in Bulgaria’s territorial waters, describing them as “a new front of escalation” and warning that they endanger crews and regional security. Even before the episode off the coast of Romania, she also expressed concern about attacks on three commercial vessels in the Black Sea, occurring in areas where Romania and Bulgaria were involved, noting that civilian vessels had become targets and that there had been loss of life. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of a drone attack on a vessel near Romania, resulting in the deaths of several crew members and the sinking of the ship.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed deep concern over what she called a new escalation by Russia in the Black Sea. Her reaction came after a civilian vessel with Ukrainian and Azerbaijani crew members was hit by a drone on Friday, off the coast of Romania.
In a message posted on the X platform, von der Leyen described the attack as reckless and said it targets innocent lives and flagrantly violates international law. She offered her condolences to the family of the sailor who was killed and expressed solidarity with the relatives of the three crew members who remain missing. The European Commission president thanked the rescue teams involved in the search operations.
