The United States will likely deploy radar and satellite communication systems in Romania to strengthen the European missile defense shield network, including the component at Deveselu, explained retired commander Valentin Mateiu for HotNews.
Mateiu emphasized that Romania is not becoming a co-belligerent in the conflict with Iran, and that the American equipment will support the functionality of the missile defense system. He also mentioned that the new radars will help monitor the airspace without involving Romania in direct military actions.
The US will send "sensors, possibly radars or similar systems" to Romania.
"It is NATO's European missile defense system, and this system has a command system, it has the Aegis Ashore systems from Deveselu, Romania, and one from Poland, and it also has three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers with Aegis systems, which are probably now in the eastern Mediterranean. And the system is based on its components and on an AN-TPY2 radar located in Turkey, which tracks the target on its initial trajectory, transmitting information to the interception systems. Very likely, redundant satellite systems have been added to ensure communication in the network with sensors, the command system, control, and other elements that are part of this network that ensures missile defense," explains Mateiu.
We remind you that on Wednesday, the CSAT approved the US request to host additional equipment and troops at two air bases in Romania, Mihail Kogălniceanu and Câmpia Turzii.
President Nicușor Dan stated that this involves "refueling aircraft, monitoring equipment, and satellite communication in correlation with the Deveselu shield" and that "these are defensive equipment. Romanians have no reason to worry."
The American military presence in Romania is temporary, for a period of 90 days, with the possibility of extension.
Subsequently, the Parliament also approved the CSAT decision.
The American military presence in Romania currently includes approximately 1,100-1,200 soldiers, mostly at the Mihail Kogălniceanu base.
The Deveselu shield, operational since 2016, can intercept ballistic missiles with a range of up to 1,200 km.
