The National Administration 'Apele Române' (ANAR) has denied the information that the European Union would impose the demolition of over one million dams in Romania. ANAR emphasized that there is no list imposed by the EU with dams that need to be decommissioned and that the term "barriers" mentioned in discussions mainly refers to minor hydraulic works, not large or strategic dams. In Europe, there are approximately 4-5000 large dams, in contrast to the figure of 1.2 million mentioned in the public space.

ANAR explained that the promoted solutions aim at the constructive adaptation of minor structures, and demolition refers only to those that are degraded or non-functional. Additionally, ANAR specified that decisions regarding dams are made exclusively by Romanian authorities, according to national legislation, and that Romania sovereignly decides which structures are maintained or decommissioned. In conclusion, ANAR reaffirmed that there are no European obligations to demolish dams and that evaluations are made based on national standards, with the aim of improving environmental conditions and public health.
