Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu stated that, following requests from civil society through the platform 'Without paper', the birth certificate will no longer be required for the renewal of identity cards.
The government has held discussions with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and all points of issuance of electronic identity cards to implement this measure. The announcement comes in response to citizens' complaints that they are asked for their birth certificate at each renewal, even though the document has already been registered. An exception is made for citizens who acquired Romanian citizenship before March 31, 2025, and who have not had a Romanian identity document issued thereafter.
Gheorghiu emphasized the importance of dialogue with citizens and mentioned that, although not all issues will be resolved immediately, the government is working to improve bureaucratic procedures.
