Sheep exports from Romania could resume within one month at most, following the lifting of restrictions imposed because of disease, according to Daniel Buda, a PNL Member of the European Parliament and vice-chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture. The statement was reported by Cluj24.

According to Buda, the European Commission understood Romania’s situation and provided more than 1.3 million vaccine doses free of charge to immunize animals intended for export to third countries. The MEP says Romania already has trade agreements with these countries, meaning deliveries can resume once the export restrictions are lifted.

Buda also announced compensation for farmers whose animals were culled because of disease. The compensation is expected to cover the value of the slaughtered animals, lost profit and the costs required to purchase new herds.

At the same time, farmers are facing drought, pastures affected by high temperatures, rising diesel prices and increases in the price of chemical fertilizers. The MEP stressed that these problems and farmers’ needs cannot be ignored.
