The Romanian Air Forces were the target of a cyber attack orchestrated by Russian hackers, who attempted to obtain information about air bases and defense structures in Romania. The attackers compromised 67 email addresses of employees of the Romanian Army, including that of the Chief of Staff of the Air Forces. The incident, which occurred last year, was not made public initially, although Romania hosts a NATO cyber center dedicated to preventing such attacks. The Romanian Army stated that only data of low importance was accessed and that the incident was quickly isolated. The attack was discovered by a group of researchers specialized in cyber threats, and IT specialists from the SRI were involved in stopping it. Alongside Romania, the hackers also targeted other countries in the region, including Ukraine, Greece, Serbia, and Bulgaria. The Ministry of Defense later confirmed the incident, emphasizing the importance of protecting military information systems.
