Following Ion Iliescu's death, the Russian Embassy published a message of condolences, calling him a "remarkable statesman" who played a key role in maintaining constructive relations between Russia and Romania. Russian media emphasized that Iliescu was a supporter of these relations, citing the signing of the friendship treaty with Vladimir Putin in 2003. Ion Iliescu said that Romania had sought to normalize relations with Russia in line with the requirements of NATO and EU membership.
