On Friday evening, a C-27J Spartan aircraft of the Romanian Air Forces took off from the 90th Air Transport Base in Otopeni, heading to Switzerland, to transport six patients with severe burns to a hospital in Paris, France. This humanitarian mission was requested by the Swiss authorities through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. During the flight, the patients will be monitored by a mixed medical team consisting of personnel from the Romanian Air Forces and the UPU SMURD of SCUB Floreasca. The Ministry of National Defense emphasized Romania's commitment to providing international assistance in emergency situations, prioritizing the saving of lives. In the past, Romania has also acted through this mechanism, including in 2025, when it transported burn patients from North Macedonia to Lithuania. The fire in Crans-Montana, which led to this mission, caused at least 40 deaths and 119 injuries, being caused by fireworks placed too close to the ceiling.
