The Romanian Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, stated that Romania is analyzing its involvement in France's nuclear deterrence strategy, which also includes collaboration with several European states, but that it is a "matter of acceptability from the population" and that there are advantages and disadvantages.

According to Miruță, there is an initial discussion at the level of the Presidential Administration, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, but he is cautious in his statements, presenting both the positive and negative aspects of Romania's involvement in France's nuclear strategy with other European states.

"It is also a matter of acceptability from the population, there are advantages, there are disadvantages. These things are weighed, and certainly, Romania will have a viewpoint on this subject. An increase in capability implies a stronger deterrence. On the other hand, there can be interpretations according to which such a presence may irritate the neighborhood more. Such matters are analyzed with reasoning and arguments to see where the resultant goes," he explained at Digi24.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will also increase the number of nuclear warheads. At the same time, he also spoke of a strategy of "advanced deterrence" that involves collaboration with eight European countries, namely Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, and Greece. This initiative aims to allow allies to participate in nuclear exercises

and to support France's nuclear arsenal with conventional forces.

Additionally, such a broader strategy from France could involve "circumstantial displacements" of certain strategic capabilities related to nuclear deterrence "among our European allies".

France possesses approximately 290 nuclear warheads, according to the latest data published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), writes Euronews.
