President Nicușor Dan declared on Tuesday, on platform X, that Romania played an active and successful role in the transatlantic effort, coordinated by the U.S. State Department, to recover two Moldovan officers held captive in the Russian Federation.

Diplomatic and intelligence actions led to an exchange of detainees, thanks to the efforts of the Romanian authorities. The SRI, in collaboration with partners from the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary, documented the espionage activities carried out by Alexandru Bălan in favor of the KGB from Belarus, which led to his detention in Romania. The Romanian judicial authorities responded positively to extradition requests from the Republic of Moldova, thus facilitating the exchange of spies.

President Maia Sandu and American officials thanked Romania for the support provided in this endeavor.

Two employees of the Information and Security Service of Moldova were released, and Alexandru Bălan, accused of treason, was pardoned in order to be extradited to Belarus.
