Daniel David, the Minister of Education, discussed the results of the European ESPAD 2024 study, which shows that Romania is below the European average in drug consumption but exceeds the average in alcohol, tobacco, gambling, and online addiction consumption. He emphasized the lack of specialists in the mental health of children and adolescents, mentioning that, although many prevention activities have been organized, they have been uncoordinated.
The Minister proposed an intervention model with three components: cleanliness around schools, education and awareness in schools, and parental involvement. Ciprian Băcilă, the president of ARPP, highlighted the crisis of specialists in pediatric psychiatry, while Gabriela Alexandrescu from 'Save the Children' emphasized the issues of addiction among adolescents. The ESPAD 2024 study was conducted on a sample of 113,882 adolescents from 37 European countries, and in Romania, 8,543 students participated in the study.
