Unit 2 of the Cernavodă NPP was restarted and resynchronized to the National Energy System on May 30, 2026, after the completion of the replacement works for a power evacuation transformer.
The reactor automatically disconnected from the grid on May 4 due to a malfunction in an insulator, which required the replacement of the transformer with a spare one. The works were complex, involving isolation, disassembly, and testing of the new transformer, adhering to nuclear industry standards. During the works, the reactor was kept safe, without impact on nuclear security, personnel, or the environment.
Nuclearelectrica, the company that operates the Cernavodă NPP, focuses on producing electricity and thermal energy through nuclear processes, having two functional reactors in operation.
