Radu Miruță: NATO can deter any attack, and security is the key to economic development

The Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, stated that the North Atlantic Alliance has the necessary capacity to demonstrate that attacking a NATO territory is not a viable option. At the Economist Romania Government Roundtable 2026, held in Bucharest, Miruță emphasized that ensuring territorial security is essential for economic development, mentioning that a secure business environment cannot exist without guarantees that investments will not be affected by conflicts in Ukraine or Iran.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted Romania's contribution to strengthening NATO's eastern flank by allocating a considerable budget for defense and close collaboration with allies. Miruță addressed the challenges of fragmented military acquisitions in Europe, emphasizing the need for common solutions to strengthen defense. He stressed the importance of deterring possible attacks by increasing investments and dialogue between defense ministries, ensuring that NATO territories and Romania are completely secure.
