The protesters, members of the Roma Party Pro Europe Association, organized a rally where they brought speakers and banners with messages such as "a fair law, not a law against Roma" and "respect for traditions". They are contesting a legislative proposal that provides severe penalties for forced marriages among minors.
The leader of the Gorj Roma Party, Nelu Pavel, explained that engagement is a necessary process for the acquaintance of young people and their families, and that marriage could follow after a period of time. The protesters are demanding either the suspension of the law or a public debate to allow marriage for young people before the age of 18, considering that the current law is an abuse.
