On January 19, the Minister of National Defense, Radu Mircea, and the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Gheorghiță Vlad, had a meeting with General Alexus G. Grynkewich, the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe. The discussions focused on Romania's and NATO's commitment to strengthening regional security and enhancing defense on the Eastern Flank. Officials emphasized the need to adapt the deterrence posture in the face of current challenges and reviewed priorities for the NATO Summit in Ankara in July 2026.

Additionally, the strategic importance of the Black Sea and the increase in defense investments were discussed, with Romania being a significant contributor. General Grynkewich appreciated Romania's contribution to supporting Ukraine. His visit to Romania, including the 99th Military Base in Deveselu, underscores the importance of cooperation between the Romanian and American armies. The two military leaders will also visit other locations to strengthen the strategic partnership and security on NATO's Eastern Flank.
