A French tourist has been arrested in Egypt on charges of smuggling antiquities after buying a statuette believed to be an original.

The woman was arrested at Luxor airport and held in a police station for eight days, later charged with possession and trafficking of antiquities. She was released after the intervention of the French ambassador but banned from entering the country for life.
