The publication Europa Liberă, funded by the U.S. Congress and the successor of Radio Europa Liberă which broadcast illegally during the communist period, will close in Romania and Bulgaria on March 31, 2026, according to sources from Pagina de Media.

With approximately 20 employees, the site was reopened in 2018 to combat disinformation and promote a free press. Thomas Kent, the president of REL/RL, emphasized the importance of broadcasts made by local journalists to support democratic values. In October 2025, Europa Liberă was the most cited publication in Romania. In 2025, the Hungarian version of the publication closed after a visit from Prime Minister Viktor Orban to the White House.

We remind that U.S. President Donald Trump suspended funding for Radio Europa Liberă/Radio Liberty in March of last year.
