Mattias Guyomar, the president of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), sent an important message to the head of the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ), Lia Savonea, emphasizing that 'the independence of the judiciary also means responsibility.' The statement came in the context of Savonea's complaints regarding the reform of special pensions for magistrates, which she considers a test for the rule of law.

Savonea warned that the government's measures could affect the perception of the independence of the judiciary. She also criticized the reform at the Constitutional Court, which rejected the referral, thus allowing the measures that increase the retirement age and reduce special pensions to come into force. Guyomar emphasized, during the meeting with the judges of the CCR, that without the rule of law there is no democracy, highlighting the essential link between these concepts.
