A man from Dâmbovița allegedly used his deceased brother’s SUMAL account to justify 122 illegal timber shipments

A man who died in May 2025 was subsequently listed in the SUMAL 2.0 application as the driver for 122 illegal shipments of timber, mainly in Dâmbovița County. The situation was discovered following routine checks carried out by gendarmes in the system.

The case drew attention after unclear photographs uploaded for some shipments were noticed. Among other things, the images showed a blurred area around the vehicles’ odometers. Checking the data associated with the person and his personal identification number showed that he had died several months before the shipments were made.

According to the Dâmbovița Gendarmerie, the deceased man’s brother allegedly used his account in the application without authorization and entered his details for the 122 shipments. Authorities believe these shipments were not carried out legally.

The gendarmes drew up a report notifying authorities of the possible use of false data in SUMAL 2.0 and unauthorized access to a computer system. The documents were sent to the Police, which will continue the investigation and order the legally required measures. The evidence and the responsibility of the indicated person will be established during the investigation.
