Cătălin Cherecheș, former mayor of the municipality of Baia Mare, has been sent to trial for the fraudulent crossing of the border, already having a five-year sentence for bribery.

Cătălin Cherecheș, former mayor of Baia Mare, is serving a five-year prison sentence for bribery in a continuous form and has been sent to trial for the fraudulent crossing of the state border. Alongside him, his accomplices, Cosmin Sabou, his former driver, and Ilie Ureche, the owner of a company that collaborated with the Baia Mare City Hall, have also been sent to trial.

The case will be judged at the Criminal Section of the Baia Mare Court. Cherecheș fled the country on November 24, 2023, on the day the final ruling was pronounced, using the identity document of a cousin. He was caught in Germany and brought back to Romania in March 2024, and is currently serving his sentence in the Penitentiary of Tăuții de Sus, Maramureș County.
