Last year, 16.2% of the citizens of the European Union – approximately 72.1 million people – were at risk of poverty, according to Eurostat data. At the NUTS 2 regional level, ten areas exceeded the 30% threshold, with the highest values in Guyana (53.3%), Ciudad de Melilla (41.4%) and Calabria (37.2%). In contrast, 28 regions had shares below 10%, with Bucharest-Ilfov recording the lowest value in the entire EU, at just 3.7%. In Romania, the risk of poverty varied significantly between regions, from 3.7% in Bucharest-Ilfov to 29.8% in South-West Oltenia.
