AUR has submitted a legislative proposal to Parliament under which people diagnosed with cancer could qualify for an old-age pension starting at age 60, provided they have completed the minimum contributory period required by law. The initiative is not yet in force and will undergo the parliamentary procedure.

The bill stipulates that early retirement before the standard retirement age would be granted upon request, regardless of the beneficiary’s work capacity or the disease’s stage of progression. The measure would apply both to people undergoing treatment or medical monitoring and to those who have completed treatment, are in remission and have returned to work.

The bill was initiated by AUR MP Dumitrina Mitrea, together with MP Andra Constantinescu. Dumitrina Mitrea argues that people who have experienced an oncological illness need a form of social protection that takes into account the disease’s impact on their lives.

According to AUR, current legislation automatically links the retirement age to changes in life expectancy, which could also affect cancer patients who have continued to work and contribute to the public pension system. The party believes that lowering the retirement age to 60 should remain applicable in the event of future increases in the standard retirement age for the general population.

Context: AUR has also promoted legislative initiatives and linked the party’s agenda to social protection and reforms in several areas

Before submitting the proposal concerning pensions for people diagnosed with cancer, AUR had also focused on other legislative initiatives. In Parliament, the party supported an initiative extending leave for caregivers of adult oncology patients, so that family members or close relatives could receive leave and an allowance when accompanying them to important medical checkups and investigations.

At the same time, AUR presented positions and proposals in the public sphere on political and economic issues, insisting on concrete measures in areas such as taxation, energy, defense, and state reform. In this context, the party’s leaders criticized the approaches of other political formations and put forward alternatives, including regarding expenditure cuts and changes to the structure of institutions.
