25 organizations and civic groups from Romania have published an open letter addressed to President Nicușor Dan, in which they express their concern regarding the direction of his mandate, won based on a 'social contract' with the citizens.

The letter emphasizes that, nearly a year after taking office, the objectives of functional state, independent justice, and genuine reforms have not been achieved, and his actions support the status quo.

The criticisms target an arrogant attitude and controversial decisions in the field of justice, including the appointment of Lia Savonea, considered a symbol of captured justice.

The organizations accuse a 'de facto decriminalization' of major corruption and a lack of response from the President. It also mentions the failure of services in managing external threats and controversial appointments at the head of the prosecutor's offices. The letter concludes with a warning that civil society will not remain a spectator and will document every decision that betrays the mandate. Among the signatories are organizations such as Corupția ucide, Freedom House Romania, and Declic.

The reaction of civil society comes after an extensive interview given by the president to Europa FM, where he stated that, among the newly appointed magistrates, he has high confidence in the Attorney General Cristina Chiriac and that "in the DNA case, there were no minors. There were no abuses," although Cornel Onilă was definitively sentenced by the ICCJ to eight years in prison for rape and other sexual assaults committed against a student at the Theological Seminary "Ioan Gură de Aur" in Huși.

Nicușor Dan also said about the criticisms made against him by civil society that he has "all the sympathy" for them, and this is normal, because "we are a Latin, emotional people."
