The bronze statue, dating from the 3rd century, was initially perceived as a representation of a mythical deity, and the inscription, composed of Greek letters, has been a puzzle to scholars. The study revealed that the inscription is a proto-Hungarian poem, unique because the sphinx cult was not part of mainstream ancient Roman mythology.
