'The Heist of the Century', directed by Teodora Ana Mihai, will be the film representing Romania in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2026 Oscars. Inspired by a real heist in the Netherlands in 2012, when a gang of Romanians stole several paintings by famous artists, the film addresses complex themes related to identity and social responsibility. It has already won significant awards at international festivals, including the Grand Prize in Warsaw and the Best Actress Award in Tokyo. Cristian Mungiu (photo), the film's screenwriter, emphasizes that it is intended for the audience, not just for festivals. The final nominations for the Oscars will be announced in January 2026.
