A false rumor regarding the death of Jonathan, a giant tortoise considered to be the oldest living animal on Earth, went viral on social media after a fake X account, posing as the reptile's veterinarian, made this announcement. It was nothing more than a scam to solicit cryptocurrency donations, reports The Guardian.
At 194 years old, Jonathan, the giant tortoise, was young when Queen Victoria ascended to the throne - and has now lived long enough to fall victim to a cryptocurrency scam.
Even news agencies like BBC, Daily Mail, and USA Today fell into the trap and picked up the false news about his death after an X account posing as Jonathan's veterinarian broke the news. The post, attributed to "Joe Hollins," claimed: "With great sorrow in my heart, I announce that our beloved Jonathan, the oldest living land animal in the world, has passed away peacefully on Saint Helena Island."
"As his veterinarian for many years, it was an honor to care for him - feeding him bananas, watching him bask in the sun, and marveling at his quiet wisdom. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience and longevity that has inspired millions. Rest in peace, old friend. We will miss you more than words can express."
