'The Stranger' is an adaptation of the famous novel by Albert Camus, which presents the life of a young man, Meursault, in Algeria in the 1940s, under French colonial rule. Instead of placing the action in the present, director Francois Ozon chose to contextualize the story, giving it a contemporary resonance. The film, made in black and white, follows the unusual process in which Meursault is judged for the lack of emotion shown at his mother's funeral, instead of being judged for the killing of a young Arab.
