Alexandra Căpitănescu, Romania's representative at Eurovision 2026 with the song 'Choke Me', discussed the meaning of the song in an interview for Agerpres. The artist responded to critics who believe that the song romanticizes violence, explaining that the message is, in fact, about love.

Căpitănescu emphasized that the title may be surprising, but the song represents a new beginning for her as an artist and a way to express her feelings. She clarified that 'Choke Me' symbolizes the desire to be suffocated by love, not by negative thoughts. The artist compared the song to other tracks that use harsh metaphors, such as 'Killing Me Softly', arguing that its message is less violent. The Eurovision 2026 contest will take place in Vienna, Austria, from May 12 to 16.
