Archimandrite Atanasie from the “Holy Cross” Monastery called Călin Georgescu the “elected president” during a service attended by the former presidential candidate. The statement, captured in a video recording shared on social media, was met with applause from some of the worshippers.
The Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Oradea announced that the circumstances and implications of the moment would be investigated in accordance with church regulations. The institution specified that, before the incident, the clergy and monastic establishments had been sent guidance regarding the incompatibility between sacred space and political manifestations.
The Diocese emphasizes that the checks do not concern the personal political choices of the archimandrite or the worshippers, but rather the use of spiritual authority and the place of worship to legitimize or promote a political figure.
The diocese’s position is based on the rules of the Holy Synod, which prohibit clergy and monastics from partisan involvement and from using church spaces, services, or symbols for political purposes. For the time being, it is not known whether Archimandrite Atanasie will be sanctioned.
