白宫在一份声明中宣布撤回提名，但没有提供理由或进一步解释。施罗耶的提名原本需要获得参议院批准。
特朗普于6月底宣布提名这名前俄克拉何马州警察担任该职务。施罗耶在该州建立了自己的职业生涯，国土安全部长马克韦恩·穆林也来自那里；穆林于3月被任命为部长。
ICE 局长一职自5月以来一直空缺，此前担任代理局长的托德·莱昂斯离任。虽然原则上局长的任命必须得到参议院确认，但自2017年以来担任该职务的所有人都是代理局长。
ICE 因被认为手段残酷而受到批评，多名法官还指责该机构故意违反法院裁决。国土安全部宣布，该机构8月逮捕了近51,000名移民，此前7月的逮捕人数创下超过50,200人的纪录。
