On Wednesday, the European Parliament will discuss the architecture and governance of the new long-term budget of the European Union for the period 2028-2034, in the presence of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The Commission proposes reforming the multiannual budget, with an estimated total of 2 trillion euros, focusing on spending for defense and competitiveness. The project includes a merger between cohesion funds and agricultural subsidies, which has generated opposition from MEPs and farmers. Leaders of the political groups in Parliament have called for the separate maintenance of the common agricultural policy. Ursula von der Leyen suggested changes to ensure funding for farmers and regions, but the proposal has been criticized for the proposed budget cuts. The European Parliament will have the final say on the budget, with member states expected to express their position by 2026.
