In the plenary session of the European Parliament, MEPs from pro-European groups called for the suspension of Hungarian Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi during an internal investigation by the European Commission, which is investigating information about a possible espionage network of Hungary within EU institutions. Commissioner Piotr Serafin confirmed that the EC has started an investigation but emphasized the importance of confidentiality. Opposition Hungarian MEPs expressed their shame over the scandal, while others from pro-government groups criticized the debate, accusing pro-Europeans of treason. Proposals to suspend Commissioner Varhelyi were supported by several MEPs who called for a thorough investigation. An investigation revealed that the Hungarian government attempted to recruit Hungarian citizens from European institutions for espionage activities between 2012-2018, and Hungary rejected the accusations as a "smear campaign."
