Stephen King is the most banned author in schools in the United States, according to a report by PEN America

The report "Banned in the USA" by PEN America documents 6,800 cases of books withdrawn in the 2024-2025 school year, a decrease of over 10,000 from 2023-24, but still well above previous levels. Approximately 80% of the bans come from Florida, Texas, and Tennessee, states that have enacted laws to withdraw books deemed unacceptable. Stephen King's books have been censored 206 times, and "A Clockwork Orange" remains the most banned work. The reasons cited include LGBTQ+ themes, depictions of race and violence, and many books have been withdrawn in anticipation of external pressures. The report highlights a trend of "preemptive submission" to censorship.
