A recent study shows that approximately 40% of teenagers in England and Wales affected by violence turn to chatbots for emotional support, preferring them to traditional mental health services. Shan, a young woman from Tottenham who lost two friends to violent acts, believes that ChatGPT offers a more accessible and less intimidating refuge. The study, conducted by the Youth Endowment Fund, highlights that both victims and perpetrators of violence are more likely to use AI for support.
It also emphasizes that chatbots respond to the unmet demand for mental health services, which have long waiting lists. However, experts warn that young people need human support, not technological, highlighting the risks associated with prolonged interactions with chatbots. Jon Yates, director of the Youth Endowment Fund, stated that it is essential to provide more support to young people, especially those exposed to risks.
