The President of the High Court of Cassation and Justice, Lia Savonea, reacted firmly to the statements of the UDMR leader, Kelemen Hunor, who suggested that there might have been an agreement in the coalition regarding the law on magistrates' pensions. Savonea stated that the ICCJ has never approved this project and that Hunor's statements risk undermining public trust in the independence of the judiciary.
The ICCJ reminds that, according to the Constitution, it does not have the authority to approve legislative projects and that any informal consultation cannot be considered an official agreement. Additionally, Savonea emphasized that the supreme court has consistently rejected legislative initiatives that could weaken the status of magistrates. Kelemen Hunor explained that in the coalition, there was discussion about raising the retirement age and the transition period, but no amendment was proposed for a pension higher than that established by the Government.
